Before entering the production phase of the Apollo space craft, NASA engineers spent years developing possible spacecraft designs and configurations. This diagram of the Lunar Excursion Module was used to show a size comparison to the Lunar Module, Command Service Module, and the pilots inside. The Lunar Excursion Module was used as one of two principal components on all of the Apollo missions and brought the astronauts onto the surface of the moon.
